Project objective

Restore dignity and improve mental health outcomes through integrated rehabilitation and strengthened community systems.

Background

Zimbabwe is facing a growing mental health crisis characterised by limited access to care, high levels of stigma, fragmented referral systems, and increasing numbers of people living with untreated mental illness in street situations.

Key activities

  • Rescue and rehabilitation through mapping, outreach, registration, assessment, immediate support, and linkage to treatment.
  • Reintegration and empowerment through family tracing, mediation, individualized plans, skills development, starter kits, and structured follow-up.
  • Stakeholder capacity building on mental health law, human rights, and referral coordination for health workers, judiciary actors, and community leaders.

Provide comprehensive physical and psychological care and treatment to people with mental illness living in the streets of Gweru and Kwekwe.

Background

The proposal responds to visible street homelessness among people living with mental illness in urban Zimbabwe and builds on existing government frameworks for protection, treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration.

Key activities

  • Identification, recruitment, and stabilisation of people living with mental illness in street situations.
  • Screening for mental health conditions and related health needs, alongside food, bathing, clothing, and grooming support.
  • Referral for inpatient care where needed, life-skills training, rehabilitation, and family reunion and reintegration support.

  • Reduced numbers of people with mental illness on the streets.
